Located, two miles inland from the sea lock at Bude harbour, the Canal Barge Workshop sits at the far end of the Helebridge Wharf and Basin. The wharf marked the end of the broad stretch of the Bude Canal. Originally, this was where cargo was transferred from barges to tub boats for the next stage of the journey inland, just 100 yards away – the Marhamchurch inclined plane. The tow path is on the other side of the canal and opposite the Barge Workshop you can see the house of George Casebourne, who was canal engineer from 1832 to 1876.The Barge Workshop was constructed around 1840 and used for storage and as a workshop by the Canal Company. The building is now owned and maintained byBude – Stratton Town Council and houses a variety of artefacts relating to the canal, as well as to other aspects of Bude’s heritage.

The Barge Workshop is owned and maintained by Bude Stratton Town Councilo. It is opened to the public on Sunday afternoons from 7th July to 29 September by Trustees from the Society from 2 pm until 5 pm. A wonderful opportunity not only to see the unique exhibits but to chat with the Trustees who will be delighted to share their knowledge and answer your questions.
